Guatemala: Northern Highway Will Start in October

President Alvaro Colom announced that construction of the Highway dubbed "Franja Transversal del Norte" will begin on October 28th or 29th.

The 356 kilometer route will connect the departments of Izabal, Quiché, Alta Verapaz and Huehuetenango, and will require an estimated investment of $240 million.

For its construction, Guatemala's government has already secured $203 million, trough a loan with the Central American Economic Integration Bank.

The President stated that "this project has been waiting for 27 years. It's not just a road, as the highway is one of six programs operating in the economic zone to be developed in the area, and these include development, investment, environmental, tourism and biodiversity programs", reported newspaper "El Periódico".

6 companies will supervise the construction of the Transverse Northern Highway (known as FTN, "Franja Transversal del Norte", in Spanish).

Four of them are from Guatemala: "Consultora en Proyectos de Ingeniería y Sistemas"; "Aquaingeniería, S.A."; "Tecnología y Normas, S.A.," and "Oficina de Ingeniería Raúl Meza Duarte".

Guatemala Approves Loan for Traversal Highway

August 2009

Congress approved a $203 million loan by BCIE, for the construction of the 362 kilometers of the highway named "Franja Transversal Norte (FTN)".

Last year, the government asked for a $203 million loan at the Central American Economic Integration Bank (BCIE). The funds would be used by the company Solel Boneh in the construction of the highway.

The BCIE approved the loan for the construction of the Northern Traversal Road, with the project scheduled to start in the first half of 2009.

The BCIE approved the $201 million loan, which includes design, supervision, administration of the right of way and the construction of the road.
