Guatemala: More time for Duty-Free Imports of Maize

The Ministry of Economy has extended the June 21 deadline for a further 3 months.

Luis Velasquez, Minister of Economy, told the media that, if necesary, they will consider a further extension.

According to an article in Prensalibre.com "He added that they need to investigate what the appropriate time frame would be so as not to harm domestic production, taking into account that the harvest begins in September."

Up until May 6, a total of 27,890 metric tons have been authorized, of a total 82,000 allowed.

The finance representative, Luis Velasquez ruled out grain shortage in the local market, justifying the measure by citing possible future events.

Prensalibre.com reported statements by the representative, "It's very difficult to lower prices by decree, and that cannot be done, therefore, we will make efforts to facilitate ways to get the product."

Guatemala Sets Import Quota for Corn and Flour

The Ministry of Economy set a maximum duty-free import quota per company.

The ceiling for white corn is up to 3.000 metric tons per person or company and for wheat flour the maximum is one thousand metric tons.

Prensalibre.com noted in their article, "the economy ministry made the official announcement yesterday in Diario de Centro America of the import of 82 metric tons of white corn and 25.000 tons of wheat flour."
