Guatemala: More Corn Flour Production

The plant belonging to Maseca Group located in the department of Chimaltenango has been expanded to increase monthly production of corn flour by 1750 metric tons.

Prensalibre.com reports that with the expansion of the plant they will now be able to "... process an additional 1,750 metric tons a month, which will be used for the manufacture of cornmeal under the brands Maseca, Tortimasa, and Masarica. The figure is equivalent to the production of 3 million 800 thousand 2 pound packs of Maseca which could make over 119 million tortillas a month. "

Representatives of Maseca Group, a subsidiary of Gruma Centroamerica, explained that the aim is to increase the volume exported to the rest of the region.

The processor and marketer of flour considers that the conditions are favorable for the economy and the agribusiness sector and plans to begin operating the new mill this month, which will be added to the already operating onein San Juan de Opico.

Guatemala Investigates Fortifying Corn Flour

The Ministry of Agriculture is working on a regulation of the Food Fortification Act, for the mandatory fortification of corn meal.

According to an article in Prensalibre.com the Agriculture Minister Efrain Medina said that "as part of a pilot scheme running in five departments, and depending on the results and acceptance in regions where the fortified flour is distributed, investigations will be carried out into whether it [cornmeal] is feasible for being subject to this legislation, to force, through specific regulations of this law, those who distribute fortified flour in the country, to have to fortify it by law. The costs are not very high and are quite affordable relative to the impact it may have as a suitable food supplement ".
