Guatemala: Stable Hiring Expectations

As reported for the first three months of the year, for the second quarter of 2019 14% of companies in the country expect to increase their payrolls.

Guatemalan employers report moderate hiring plans for the second quarter of 2019, with 14% of employers hoping to increase their workforces, 4% expect a decrease and 82% do not expect changes, reported Manpower.

The report states that "... An increase in workforces is expected for three of the five regions during the April-June period. The strongest hiring rate is forecast for the Center, where a Net Employment Trend of +15% is reported. On the other hand, moderate increases in the workforce are expected in the West with a trend of +5%, while in the South, a moderate hiring pace is expected with a trend of +2%. However, employers expect to reduce their workforce in the East with a trend of -6% and in the North a trend of 0% is reported.

Employers in five of the six industry sectors expect to increase workforces during the next quarter. The strongest labor market is expected for the Communications & Transportation sector, with a Net Employment Trend of +17%. Slight increases are expected in the Construction and Services sectors, with Trends of +16% and +15%, respectively. Employers in the Manufacturing sector expect an optimistic hiring rhythm, reporting a +11% Trend, while increases in the workforce are expected for the Agriculture, Fishing, Mining & Extraction sector, where the Trend remains at +8%. However, the Trade sector anticipates a slow hiring pace with a Trend of 0%.

Increases in workforces of all four organizational sizes are expected during the second quarter of 2019. Large companies report optimistic hiring plans with a Net Employment Trend of +29%. On the other hand, Medium-sized companies report a favorable Trend of +10%, while Trends remain at +5% and +4% for Micro and Small Businesses, respectively

Although by the fourth quarter of 2019, 13% of companies are expected to increase their payrolls, the proportion that anticipates a decrease went up to 11%.

13% of employers expect an increase in their workforce, 11% anticipate a decrease and 74% remain unchanged, resulting in a Net Employment Trend of +2%, explains the ManPower report.

After it was reported for the second quarter of 2019 that 14% of companies projected to increase their payrolls, for the third quarter this proportion went down to 13%.
