Commercial activities were mostly responsible for the growth in the economic activity index in December, which registered an increase of 4.5% compared to the same month in 2015.

Economic activity measured by estimating the IMAE, up to December 2016, showed an increase of 4.5% (3.6% in December 2015). This result was driven by the positive performance experienced mainly in the following economic activities: Wholesale and retail trade; Manufacturing industries; Transport, storage and communications; private services; Mining and quarrying; and Agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing. Click to interact with graphicsClick to interact with graphics

The seasonally adjusted rate registered a variation of -0.3% in December 2016 compared to the previous month, while the cycle trend recorded an annual growth rate of 3.4%, more dynamic than a year ago.

Exploitation of mines and quarries was responsible for most of the variation in the economic activity index in May of this year, registering a year-on-year increase of 2.4%.

Economic activity in Guatemala grew by 2.9% in the first month of 2016, according to figures from the Bank of Guatemala.
