Guatemala: Correction of Certificates of Origin in Mexico

Starting from March 10 a mechanism will be in effect that will allow importers and exporters to make corrections to certificates of origin under the trade agreement with Mexico.

Monday, February 20, 2017

From a statement issued by the Chamber of Industry in Guatemala:

We wish to publicise that the mechanism adopted within the framework of the meeting of the Administrative Commission of the Free Trade Agreement -FTA- between Guatemala and Mexico, which took place in January, approval was given for importers and exporters to make corrections to their certificates of origin, for which there will be 15 days in each case.

Before this measure was approved, any errors that are contained in the certificates of origin were not subject to correction, which caused significant complications with customs authorities, additional costs and extra waiting times in the logistics process. It is worth noting that this was the only trade agreement that did not have this flexibility and the possibility of making amendments.

This measure, which promotes facilitation and streamlining of trade, will come into effect from March 10 this year, and will promote increased trade between Guatemala and Mexico.
