Guatemala: 77% Increase in Tax Revenue from Mining

In the first 9 months of 2010, tax revenues from mining increased by 77% compared to same period in 2009.

Guatemala collected a total of $ 42.5 million as a result of this activity so far in 2010, $ 18.6 million more than the same period in 2009.

Mario Marroquin Rivera, from the Mines Union, said the increase could be attributed to rising international prices of gold and silver and the increase in production of certain mines.

In the first half of the year revenues generated by taxes increased by 18% compared to the same period in 2010.

Value added tax and income tax grew the most in the aforementioned period, by 18% and 34% respectively.

While overall growth was seen, decreases were observed in the amounts collected from taxes such as the tax on tobacco and the distribution of oil and its derivatives.

Guatemalan Tax Revenue Up 7.4% in March

The country collected $397 million (3.17 billion quetzales) in March, according to data from the Tax Authority (SAT).

In the first quarter of 2010 tax revenue summed $1.13 billion, a 7.9% increase when compared to the same period of 2009, when $1.05 billion were collected.
