Guatemala: $10 Million for Rebuilding Schools

The money will be used to rebuild 1.128 schools damaged or destroyed by Agatha tropical storm and the eruption of Pacaya volcano.

Government authorities explained that the resources are part of a $150 million loan by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). This loan was intended for the country’s educational system, but had not been used so far due to its strict requirements.

“IDB has helped us by redirecting some loans so we can have more money available. In this particular case, they eased the requirements attached to the laon”, explained Alvaro Colom, Guatemalan President.

José Plana, director of Engineering and Architecture Department of the Ministry of Education (MEDUC), noted that works will begin in January with maintenance tasks on 300 schools.
