Guatemala gives seal of approval to higher bus fares

Guatemala's Communications Ministry authorized fare increases on short-haul inter-city bus routes.

The new fares, which the bus companies imposed unilaterally more than a month ago, mean an increase of one quetzal – about 14 US cents – at peak hours, and half a quetzal at other times.

Several companies were fined for raising fares by 5 US cents without permission. But the deputy transport minister, Luis Felipe Moreno, said the companies were making other demands that would be even more costly for the public.
