First Round of FTA with Peru Completed

On November 12th, in the Peruvian capital, the parties concluded the first round of negotiations for an FTA between Peru and the region.

At this first meeting, considered a success, progress was made on items like "Market Access for Goods, Rules of Origin, Customs Procedures and Customs Cooperation Sanitary and Health Measures, Technical Barriers for Trade, Commercial Defense, Competition Policy, Services, Investment, Intellectual Property, Public Purchases, Corporate Affairs and Conflict Resolution," reported Laestrella.com.pa.

Negotiations included Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Peru.

The exchange of offers for goods and services is scheduled for January 10, 2011 and the second round of negotiations on the 17th of January in Panama City.

From February 28 until March 4, the Costa Rican capital will host the third round of negotiations.

Francisco Alvarez de Soto, vice minister of international trade negotiations of Panama told the media that this round has made significant progress, "I must be optimistic. We are making good progress. We agreed on three chapters and the other tables are reporting progress."

The round of negotiations is scheduled for the second half of January in Panama City.

The new meeting is to be held between the 17th and 21st of January with participation of trade officials from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama.

"The Panamanian authorities have said that while negotiating together, at the end, every country will sign a bilateral treaty with Peru", states the article at Prensa.com.

The first round of FTA negotiations between Peru and the region began on Monday in the Peruvian capital.

Negotiation teams from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and Peru are participating. Guatemala and Nicaragua have decided not to join current negotiations, but an accession clause will be included in case they want to join later.
