Expansion Work on Cinco de Noviembre Dam

With a $ 36 million investment, Salvadoran authorities announced the start of expansion works at the dam.

The Hydroelectric Executive Commission of the Lempa River (CEL) stated that production capacity will increase by 80 MW.

“CEL explained that this expansion will be funded from two loans plus equity. The project will be tendered next May and it is expected to be completed in 2014," published Elsalvador.com.

The Autonomous Executive Commission of the Lempa River in El Salvador has hired the Costa Rican state run company to manage electrical extension works on the hydroelectric station called 5 de Noviembre.

The Executive Hydroelectric Commission of the Lempa River (CEL) will make an award this week for the expansion of the ‘5 Noviembre’ dam, a project that represents $165.5 million in investment.

The investment will be financed by the CABEI, which is providing $57.5 million, Germany's state financing agency, with $57.5 million, the European Union will contribute $ 7.5 million through the Regional Forum Facility investment in Latin America (LAIF) and the CEL will provide $43 million.

The government of El Salvador is considering adding two 40 MW generators to the Central 5 de Noviembre, with an estimated cost of $136 million.

The project could be operational in 2014, and would add 80 MW to the national grid.

Executives from the Lempa River Hydroelectric Executive Commission and the General Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications, signed the Concession Agreement for the November 5 power plant to be expanded, with the expected outcome of increasing the power output to the market by 80 MW.
