Europe and Central American to hold low-level negotiations in Honduras

Central America and the EU will hold a round of negotiations in March to "expedite and energize" the agreement of association.

Nicolas Bulte, EU chief for economic policy and the press for Central America, in an article by proceso.hn "...explained that in this round, which will be held by request of Central America, both blocks will jointly define which of the 12 subtopics have had the slowest progress up to now."

The official also acknowledged the sensitivity of the banana and sugar topics regarding access to the European market.

The European Commission informed in a press release that they plan to resume the negotiation process on February 22.

Honduras will participate fully and Panama will take part as an observer.

Regional Banana exports to receive preferential treatment

European negotiators of the Commercial Agreement of Association confirmed that banana exports from the region to Europe will receive preferential treatment.

Nicola Ardito, a member of the EU negotiating team, said in a statement to a group of Central American reporters that "there will be preferential treatment for banana. I don't know how what percentage, but yes we will be giving preferential treatment."

The European Union is prepared to discuss the possibility of banana imports as part of the agenda for talks on an association with Central America.

Bananas is one of the touchiest subject in negotiations toward an agreement on free trade, cooperation and political dialogue. The talks are due to conclude next year.
