Panamanian coffee selected by auction the second most expensive in the world

During the twelfth edition of the event "The Best of Panama" last week, the lot of Geisha coffee from the Carlos Castillo finca was declared winner out of 16 entries, Francisco Serracín of the Association of Special Panamanian Coffees reported today.

Judges scored the winning entry at 93 out of 100 possible points.
Last year's winning entry was sold for 130 dollars per pound (460 grams). Only the Kopi Luwak coffee of Indonesia was dearer. The Geisha coffee was sold through an electronic auction the following month, said Serracín.
All of the entries that took part in this year's competition will be auctioned by internet the third week of May.
Panama's best coffee is grown in the western highlands, about 500 km west of Panama City.

June 11 will see the international auction via the internet of specialty coffees from Panama, from the district of Boquete, in Chiriqui.

According to Plinio Ruiz, president of the Specialty Coffee Growers of Panama (SCAP by its initials in Spanish), there will be 25 lots of coffee in the auction which were the winning entries in the Best Of Panama contest recently held in Boquete.

‘Geisha Natural’ Coffee Dominates Online Auction

May 2011

A new variety of coffeee called Geisha Natural participated for the first time in "Best of Panama" competition, and reached the highest price in the auction.

The coffee from the Don Pachi State farm was sold at $111.50 a pound.

A total of 30 lots of specialty coffee were traded totaling $176,837.
