Electric bills for business to go up by 38% in El Salvador

Business will soon pay 38 percent more for electricity in El Salvador. The private sector is negotiating with the government over the stages in which the increase will be applied as the subsidy is gradually eliminated.

El Salvador President Antonio Saca says the difference between the real cost of energy and the amount the privat sector ccurrently pays has widened due to rising energy costs.
This year, to maintain the state freeze on energy billing would cost almost 200 million dollars, an amount the government says it cannot afford to maintain and it will have to end the subsidy.

The Executive Hydroelectric Commission of the Lempa River (CEL) will transfer this amount to finance subsidies for electric energy consumers using up to 200 kW.

President Elias Antonio Saca will place the first stone for the El Chaparral central hydroelectric plant that will mark the formal start of construction.

The initial investment, estimated to be $163 million, will be financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Intergration, as was recently confirmed by the president of the Rio Lempa Hydroelectric Executive Commission (CEL), Nicolas Salume.

Saca pledges to maintain subsidies in El Salvador

The government of El Salvador will maintain subsidies on basic services while implementing an austerity plan to confront the nation's economic crisis, President Elías Antonio Saca said.

In a message to the nation, Saca said he wanted to be frank. "I know the situation is difficult, and there's nothing to indicate that this is going to change in the short term," he said.
