In relation to foreign trade, official figures report that between 2010 and 2016 imports of medicinal and pharmaceutical products increased from $397 million to $602 million. And in the case of exports, for the years in question there was an increase from $52 million to $153 million.

Regarding growth of the sector, Fernando Espinal, member of the board of directors of the Dominican Pharmaceutical Industries (Infadomi), explained to Eldinero.com.do that " ... the local market is 'very stable' and that from the point of view of sales they have grown."

Espinal added that " ...What happens is that the pharmaceutical industry has a particularity, when compared with any other sector, it is very stable. There are no large spikes in growth, but there are no large spikes in degrowth either.  It has maintained its tendency".
