El Salvador: Water Dams Studies Underway

Ibernisa conducts a study to identify optimal areas for construction of small hydro power plants.

After having identified the areas, the Executive Committee of Rio Lempa (CEL) will begin studies for construction of small hydroelectric dams, which together will generate 20MW.

"The study began on January 24, 2011, and is expected to be ready in late August 2011. The update will cost $ 300,000. Following the studies, CEL would define how the projects will be awarded: if they will administer or handle them in concession to a private operator," adds Laprensagrafica.com.

El Salvador: Contracts for El Chaparral

The Russian company Tyazhmash will design and build a 66 MW turbine and the Salvadoran company Dycsa will build the powerhouse and finish the remaining work on the El Chaparral hydroelectric dam.

The Executive Hydroelectric Commission of the Lempa River (CEL) signed contracts with the two companies to resume work on the El Chaparral hydroelectric project, which has been on hold since 2013.

Support for Mini Hydropower in Guatemala

El Salvador: Hydroelectric Damn Expansion in 2011

By the end of 2011, work is scheduled to have begun on expanding the damn known as "5 November" located 78km from the Salvadoran capital, San Salvador.

The work comprises the installation of new 40 megawatt generators, increasing the hydroelectric dam's capacity to 179.4 MW.

The hydroelectric sector in Panama is a boiling pot where scores of projects are cooked, garnished with failures and speculation.

Eighty-nine concession requests are pending, 43 projects have had permissions denied or canceled by the developers and another 31 projects are in different phases of design or construction.
