Entrepreneurs believe that if the correct measures are applied export earnings could double within five years. According to Pablo Duran, president of the Exporters Association of El Salvador (COEXPORT), the proposal gives potential annual growth of 20%.
The first point of the approach is competitiveness, according to COEXPORT companies must comply with international requirements such as certifications and registrations in the destination countries in relation to distribution and packaging. "We need to offer products that meet the safety and hygiene requirements, especially now that countries such as the U.S. through have increased the requirements through the FDA ... " said Duran.
The second focuses on conducting market intelligence. The Corporation in conjunction with a Spanish company is working on creating a publication in which entrepreneurs can export their products and find out about offers abroad. This project could be operational in late September with sectoral newsletters.
The entry being prepared by the government into the Pacific Alliance will bring more market opportunities but also the requirement for more competition.
Currently the country is an observer of the Pacific Alliance and it is possible that at some point it will become part of the block, but that will not happen anytime soon.
Entrepreneurs are being encouraged to diversify export beyond their traditional preferences for the United States.
El Salvador has a trade deficit with countries like Chile, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, so the Exporters Corporation of El Salvador (Coexport), Al-Invest, the Agency for Promotion of Exports and Investments (Proesa), and the U.S.
The export sector is optimistic about an increase in foreign sales but is calling for greater support from the government.
The president of the Exporters Corporation of El Salvador, Coexport, César Bolaños, believes that the increase in exports could be higher if they had more support from the Government. Contrarily he considers the actions taken by the government have affected the sector's competitiveness internationally.
