Visit El Salvador Without Paying Taxes

In order to promote tourism passengers with flight connections in El Salvador will be allowed remain in the country and take advantage of tourist activities for up to 48 hours without paying taxes.

From a press release issued by the Ministry of Tourism of El Salvador (MITUR):

THE PROJECT SEEKS TO ATTRACT TOURISTS IN TRANSIT THROUGH THE AIRPORT AND INVITE THEM TO TAKE PART IN TOURISM ACTIVITIES FOR UP TO 48 HOURS, WITH NO ADDITIONAL CHARGES.

STOP OVERS IN THE COUNTRY WILL BRING REVENUE OF APPROXIMATELY $15 MILLION A YEAR.

September 2 2014.- Today the Vice President, Lic. Óscar Ortiz with the Minister of Tourism, Lic. José Napoleon Duarte Duran released the details of the project 'El Salvador Stop Over', with which it seeks to exempt from taxes transit passengers traveling through the Oscar Arnulfo Romero and Galdámez International Airport, and encourage them to tour the country for up to 48 hours.

The event marked the first phase of the launch of the Stop Over project, which consisted of the signing of the letter of inter institutional cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism, Salvadoran Tourism Corporation, the General Directorate of Migration and Alien Affairs, and the Executive Committee Autonomous Port, which commits the parties to work in a coordinated manner in order to realize this project.

5,000 tourists have taken advantage of the tourism promotion program known as Stop Over', which allows air passengers with connections of between 5 and 48 hours to go out of the airport without incurring any additional fees.

Avianca Cancels Direct Flights from San Jose

Flights from San Jose to New York, Los Angeles, Havana, Quito and Guayaquil will now stop in El Salvador or Colombia.

Avianca announced the cancellation of five direct flights from San Jose, as part of a restructuring program that the company is undertaking. Flights to Los Angeles, New York, Havana, Quito and Guayaquil, will leave the country but will now stop in El Salvador or Colombia.
