El Salvador: $47 million for Prisons Announced

The investment was announced by the government and resources will be used to improve infrastructure and equipment in prisons and farms.

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security announced that this year it will be allocating $47 million to the prison system, particularly for improving infrastructure and equipment in prisons, particularly temporary centers in Zacatecoluca, La Esperanza and Izalco and agricultural farms in Zacatecoluca and Izalco. 

According to Elmundo.sv Minister Mauricio Ramirez Landaverde explained that "... there will be 12,000 new prison spaces, which will be created this year, to reduce overcrowding, but also to allow them to boost rehabilitation programs, including for the population of incarcerated gang members."
