El Salvador: $2.3 Million for River Banks

Work on the Lempa River Bank could start next week and be ready in late May.

The works are being done to repair 30 meters of the river bank which gave way last year due to heavy rains, and some additional 20 meters.

Saul Avelar, chairman of the MAG's infrastructure division, told La Prensa Gráfica: "This embankment has allowed the inhabitants of the Bajo Lempa area to know when they have to evacuate the zone to avoid the loss of human life, even though material losses sometimes cannot be avoided."

The government has presented a reconstruction plan for Bajo Lempa for $21 million and reiterated its commitment to the development of this area of El Salvador.

A press release from the Presidency of the Republic of El Salvador reads:

The President, Mauricio Funes, today announced a reconstruction plan for Bajo Lempa for about $21 million, and reiterated his government's commitment to the development of this important area of El Salvador.
