Rio Hato Airport and the Decameron Hotel

Complaints by Decameron about the effect of the new airport on its hotel in Coclé could be eased by the construction of a road which would provide access to another hotel owned by the chain.

In an article in Prensa.com President Martinelli referred to complaints by the Decameron hotel chain concerning damage to the hotel brought about by the remodelling of the old airport, in particular that aircraft noise would bother the guests.

"I told Lucio [Lucio Garcia, president of Decameron] to tell me where in the country he wanted to build another hotel and he told me he had bought 700 acres in the Nombre de Dios, where he will set up a 300-room hotel."

Martinelli revealed that a 22 km road will be constructed leading to the resort chain’s new 300-room hotel which will be build on the coast in Colon.

The investment in the airport in Rio Hato has generated several months of controversy between local authorities and civic organizations in regions such as Aguadulce, Anton, Penonomé, Santiago and Chitre, who have complained about the works in their communities. The government chose the Rio Hato site based on a recommendation from the Andean Development Corporation, whose detailed study has not been revealed.
