Friday, July 3, 2009

In interannual terms, the indicator rose 8.2%. The accumulated variation in the first six months of this year was 1.21%, smaller than the 6.55% increase during the same period last year. Among the groups that reported monthly decline are in the food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.71%), entertainment and culture (-0.08%) and education (-0.06%). On the other hand, communications, transportation and household goods, and domestic services showed moderate rises of 0.5%, 0.19%, 0.19% respectively. Among the groups that showed the highest increases are rentals and housing (1.22%), alcoholic beverages (0.95%), cigarettes, food and beverages outside of the home (0.87%), and health (0.79%).

The leveling of the prices of raw materials, the contraction of liquidity, as a result of protecting exchange rate, as well as the weak state of economic activity are the elements that remain low, or even negative, the rate of growth in prices. Yesterday, the Central Bank of Costa Rica announced an increase in the passive basic rate. The rate, calculated by the monetary authority, showed an increase of 25 base points, from 11% to 11.25%. We consider that the interest rates in colones will continue to pressure upwards in the coming months.
