Approval in France of the so called Gernelle Act 2 in July of this year, states for the first time obligations regarding environmental labeling.

It is adequate to note that the driving force for such measures came not from governments but from supermarket chains, including Wal-Mart, which leads the market in Central America.

On her article in Americaeconomia.com, Alejandra Medina writes "in Chile, Wal-Mart has notified its most important suppliers to put an emphasis on sustainability policies which will be implemented in the near future."

Formal Accreditation for Carbon Footprints

The Costa Rican body responsible for accreditation has certified the Standards Institute of Costa Rica as the first accredited body to verify carbon footprints.

A statement from the Standards Institute of Costa Rica (INTECO) reads:

Regulations on Food Packaging in China

August 2012

Regulations on food packaging come into effect in January 2013, with emphasis on nutritional labeling information.

A press release from Procomer reads:

Regulations on food packaging will take effect from January 1, 2013, to guide the public and reduce the risks of non-communicable chronic diseases, reported Su Zhi, representative of the Ministry of Supervision Public Health of China on August 13.

Costa Rica: Mislabeling Sanctions

October 2009

The National Consumer Commission sanctioned six supermarkets and an imports company because of labeling errors.

These companies were sanctioned for offering the final consumer a product labeled as dairy, but not classified as such.

"In July, ... it ruled against supermarket chains Automercado, Megasuper, Wal-Mart, 'Consorcio Cooperativo de Consumo', 'Prismar de Costa Rica', Perimercados, as well as against 'Mercantil de Alimentos'", reported website El Financiero.
