EU Resumes C.A. Negotiation Without Honduras

Negotiations for the association agreement would be resumed in September without Honduras, who could rejoin later if it resolves its political situation.

This was announced by Spain Vice President María Teresa Fernández.

"She said they expect to resume them [the negotiations] mid September, and expect progress in the banana issue, the only thing still to be solved, and for what they are expectant of an WTO decision regarding European fruit tariffs", reported Prensalibre.com.

Negotiation Without Honduras to be Decided by EU

The European Union will study tomorrow if they resume trade negotiations with Central America without Honduras.

The topic will be analyzed in the Latin America Committee of the European Council (COLAT).

"We will discuss the best action path. There are several proposals over the table", said sources from the Swedish Government, as reported by Elheraldo.hn.

UE Agreement Postponed Until September

Commerce authorities from El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica decided to resume negotiations in September.

Guatemala's Economic Minister, Rubén Morales, informed that if the Honduran political crisis is not resolved by September, they will consider resuming negotiations without the country, and letting Honduras rejoin later.

Central America Will Study EU Agreement

Next week in Costa Rica, the countries of the region will define their negotiation strategy with the European Union.

The meeting will take place at the Central American Integration Secretary, known in Spanish as Sieca.

Trade representatives from Costa Rica will meet with EU delegates to resume negotiations.

Bruno Stagno, Foreign Relations minister, and Marco Vinicio Ruiz, Commerce minister, will meet with Europe's foreign relations commissar, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, with the objective of unfreezing the negotiation process, which was paralyzed by the Honduran crisis.
