Increased Consumption of Fruits and Vegetables in the U.S. Foreseen

Purchases of fruit and vegetables by the American nation will go from $8.3 to $9 billion between January and August 2014.

The Department of Agriculture in the United States has recorded increases in imports of fresh and processed vegetables, processed fruits and juices, confectionery, meat and derivatives of chocolate and coffee.

The United States will increase its purchases of fruit and vegetables this year, according to sources from the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX).

The Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that in the course of 2014 consumer spending on food will exceed the amount spent during the past year, achieving purchases totaling $113 billion, $ 8 billion more than in 2013.

Costa Rica will have to face competition from pineapples exported from Malaysia to the U.S. market. Although initially it is expected that there will be a low volume in the market, affects could be felt in the medium and long term.

Data from the Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer) indicate that between January and October of this year, Costa Rican agricultural exports reach $1.8 billion, or 12.04% more than the $1.6 billion recorded for the same period in 2007.

Costa Rica's January-May exports up by 7.8 percent

Costa Rica increased its exports by 7.8 percent between January and May of this year, with almost all productive sectors showing improvement.

Only bananas and melons failed to show an increase, the Ministry of Foreign Trade reported in a news release.
Total exports for the period were 4.175 billion dollars, an increase of about 300 million dollars from the same period in 2007.
