Del Monte to Appeal Closing of Pineapple Producer in Costa Rica

The Environmental Administrative Court ordered an immediate halt of activities and the closing of the pineapple packing plant.

In the face of the Environmental Administrative Tribunal's decision to close its packing plant facilities for exceeding the permitted amount of a chemical in its wastewater, the Del Monte Agricultural Development Corporation, SA, indicated that it would appeal the decision.

The Elfinancierocr.com website reported the company’s statements: "An official company communiqué argued that the chemical has not been used since the plant was purchased less than a year ago because they are Health Ministry requirements."

The Administrative Environmental Court authorized Fresh Del Monte to reopen its pineapple packing plant under set conditions.

On May 18th, the Court ordered an immediate stop and closure of the plant´s activities in Siquirres, Limón for surpassing the permitted amount of chemicals in its runoff water.

New Vegetable Packing Plant in Costa Rica

An appeals court maintained a series of precautionary measures hampering the development of Crucitas gold mine, owned by Infinito Gold.

The court’s decision was based on a “in dubio pro natura” principle, which implies prevention and precaution in favor of natural resources. The measures against the company will remain in place until a final ruling is issued.

It is good to see the executive branch of the country acting in this way, ie, taking the actions necessary for the smooth running of the economy, without resorting to the eternal mantra of "we are evaluating..." and without hiding behind a thousand excuses put forward to justify the intricately knotted red tape that in countries in the region is stifling the drivers of wealth creation: companies.
