Bids reception for the IPL Concurrence Competitive Act ETESA 02-10, for the power supply contract, period from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2029, will take place on January 25th, 2011. The process has been approved by ASEP and has been published on its website.
The power must meet the requirements of distribution companies Elektra Noreste, SA (MHS), electrical distribution company Metro-Oeste, SA (EDEMET) and electrical distribution company Chiriqui, SA (EDECHI).
According to regulations, power contracts were assigned to transmission companies as an additional responsibility within the Panamanian electricity market, with the purpose of ensuring the best possible price for the energy, directly benefiting end customers. ETESA has the responsibility of carrying out the process, the preparation of the statements, calling for the bid, the evaluation and award of contracts, making sure the contracts address factors of economy, efficiency and guarantee of supply.
Until the month of October 2010, according to reports from the National Dispatch Center, the maximum power demand was 1184.59 MW. By source of generation the supply was covered in the following manner: 25.75% by thermal plants, 63.74% by hydraulic plants, 8.93% by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and 1.58% was contributed by Central America, through regional interconnection.
