Deadline for Telecommunications Registration

Telecommunications companies in Costa Rica will have time to request authorization to operate until June 30.

The Superintendent of Telecommunications (SUTEL) of Costa Rica informed that June 2 is the deadline, reminding entrepreneurs that, according to the Telecommunications Act, any company that provides telecommunications services to the public or that operates and exploits public networks, requires authorization from the entity to operate.

In an Elfinancierocr.com article, it was reported: "The application includes submission of corporate information on currently offered services."

The Superintendent of Telecommunications of Costa Rica estimates that it will deliver the first licenses to operate in the market in July.

The period specified by the Telecommunications Superitendent (Sutel) is consistent with the terms of the General Telecommunications Law, and it contemplates a resolution of all the objections to the admission of the different businesses presented by the Costa Rican Institute of Telecommunications (ICE) and RACSA.

The Telecommunications Superintendence (Sutel) will host an informative meeting with companies interested in obtaining a frequency for mobile telephony services.

The meeting will take place on January 18th, at 11 a.m. at Hotel Intercontinental in San José.

"George Miley, head of Sutel's council, explained that the meeting will be used to explain which public contest process will be used to auction mobile telephony frequencies to new operators", reported Nacion.com.

Costa Rica Accelerates Mobile Telephone Concession

April 2009

A new mobile phone operator could enter the market in February 2010. The cartel will be published between June and September 2009.

After the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Telecommunications (MINAET) requests for the Superintendent of Telecommunications (SUTEL) to begin the tender for the concession in May 2009, the whole process could last from 3 to 6 months, depending on the assessment method used.
