Crisis Does Not Affect Medical Tourism

By the end of the year, the number of tourists using medical services in Costa Rica will reach 20.000.

Sector entrepreneurs hold that while a drop in demand was felt in the first quarter of the year, the situation has reverted. The current trend is a growth one, and is is expected to reach 100.000 patients in the next 5 years.

"However, businessmen believe that there are political and economic variables to solve. One of them has to do with statistical information", published El Financiero in its web site. "One topic that has been recently resolved was the creation of a center for alternate conflict resolution in health matters".

More Global Competition in Medical Tourism

Mexico, Spain and Poland are looking to position themselves as medical tourism destinations competing with the traditional ones such as India, Thailand, Brazil and Turkey.

Besides traditional competitors such as India, Thailand, Brazil and Turkey, new international players such as Mexico, Spain and Poland are now seeking to position themselves as medical tourism destinations. On the one hand is Poland, which through a government program is trying to promote itself as a good country in which to find health treatment, rehabilitation, diagnosis and aesthetics services and, through its participation in three consecutive fairs (Miami 2012, Moscow and Monaco in March 2013), has managed to be taken into account by the experts as a new player in this market.

In Costa Rica there are 17 companies with a seal of approval for this activity.

The International Council for the Promotion of Medicine in Costa Rica (Promed) awarded the companies Advance Dental, Prisma Dental, Instituto Flikier de Rehabilitación Oral and Dentavac the quality seal during inauguration of the Third Latin American Congress of Medical Tourism on Monday.

Medical Tourism Growing in Guatemala

Services for alternative medicine and dentistry are those most requested by visitors.

Promotion work by professionals in the sector grouped around the Committee on Tourism, Health and Welfare of the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport) has generated a sustained increase in the sector since 2007.

Representatives of U.S. medical institutions made a visit to the country in order to promote it as a medical destination.

The delegation consists of representatives from Jackson Memorial Hospital, Badia Hand and Shoulder Center, Katalyst, World Wide Medical Partners and Baptist Health South Florida.
