Panamanian Imports Grow by 22%

In January 2012 the value of imports brought in Panamanian ports, excluding companies operating from the CFZ, reached $944.5 million, $171.1 million more than in the same period last year.

The value of imports for the month of January 2012, placed in Panamanian ports, excluding companies that operate from the Colon Free Zone, reached B/.944.5 million ($ 944.5 million), which is B /. 171.1 million ($ 171.1 million) or 22.1% more than in the same period last year, according to a study by the Economic and Social Analysis Unit at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), based on figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Census, the Controller General of the Republic.

The study emphasizes that growth is attributed to a demand for goods caused by increased economic activity (weight increase 29%).

It stresses that foreign purchases were concentrated in minerals and petroleum B/.220.4 million ($220.4 million), machines and sound reproducing apparatus B/.156 million ($156 million), transport equipment B / 112.6 million ($112.6 million), base metals B/.74.8 million ($74.8 million), chemicals B/.69.7million ($69.7 million) and food B/.61.3 million ($61.3 million) .

The report from the Economic and Social Analysis Unit, emphasizes that the main suppliers were the United States (23.4%), China (6.3%), Costa Rica (4%), Mexico (3.6%), Colombia (3.7%), Japan (3.7%) and South Korea (3.5%). 21.5% came from the Petroleum Free Zone and l0.8% from the Colon Free Zone.

5.9% Decrease in Panamanian Service Exports

For the first quarter, there were $2.68 billion exported; $169 million less than during the same period in 2008.

The areas that dropped the most were banking services and re-exports from the Colón Free Trade Zone.

Prensa.com published data from the General Accounting Office: "These declines could not be offset by income from the Panama Canal or service exports related to tourism and port and logistics sectors, which maintained increases of 11%, 8.7% and 1.6% respectively."

Nicaragua reports higher exports

Exports from Nicaragua have increased by 30.5 percent during the first half of 2008, compared with the same period a year earlier.

The January-June exports totalled 835.3 million dollars, up from 640.6 million dollars in the first half of 2007, according to a report issued by the Center for Processing Exports (CETREX) in its preliminary monthly report.
