Figures from the General Mercantile Registry of Guatemala (RMG) show that "from January to July, 43,130 individual traders, mercantile companies, national and foreign companies were registered, while in 2016 36,133 were registered, that is to say 6,997 less."

Abelardo Medina, from the Central American Institute of Fiscal Studies (ICFI), told Agn.com.gt that "... companies that register have a higher level of formality and are willing to comply with all the requirements established by law in terms of tax and labor, among other things. 'The fact that there are more people willing to start a business implies, in some way, that there is a commitment to improving formality, which does not mean that the country's economic situation has been totally fixed'."
