Costly State Power Inefficiency in Costa Rica

Industrialists have petitioned the regulatory authority to lower electricity rates and rules in order to prevent uncontrolled spending on fuel for generation.

Chamber of Industries claims that problems related to the ICE's operational efficiency are making electricity rates soar.

• Industrialists question unnecessary spending of over ₡17 billion on electricity generation.
• ICRC files for an ordinary rebate on electricity tariffs with ARESEP, confident that the institution will convene a public hearing.

Given the high costs of electricity that Costa Ricans users have suffered in the past year, the Chamber of Industries of Costa Rica, ICRC is taking action on the matter and asking the ARESEP for a reduction of 11% in electricity rates for the last quarter, and to lay the foundation for efficient spending to be made in the generation and distribution of this public service.

Industry has expressed its anger against the rising cost of electricity as it is making production more expensive and exports are becoming less competitive against rival markets where energy is cheaper.
