With a total investment of $600 million, the Pirrís Hydroelectric Plant, located in the Los Santos area, took 10 years to build. It has the country's highest dam, standing at 114 meters.

According to the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad, ICE, "the machinery for the project is semi-underground, the substructure is located in a pit 29 meters in diameter and 25 meters in depth. The vent will be via a tunnel 280 m long and 3.30 m in diameter, which will carry the discharge from the river Pirrís, about 300 m above sea level. "

"President Laura Chinchilla cut the tape and turned on the machines at the hydroelectric plant Pirrís ...

At least that's what representatives from the ICE reported as all acts were performed without access being allowed to the dozens of reporters, cameramen and photographers who arrived in the area", reported Nacion.com.
