Peru Grows as a Consumer Market

August 2009

Peru's economy has improved in the last years, specially its services sector, causing an important increase in consumption.

This was one of the findings of a study by Costa Rica's exports promotion agency, which pointed out opportunities for Costa Rican as well as regional exporting companies.

Costa Rica to revise export target

July 2008

Costa Rica is going to revise its export target before this month is out, Foreign Trade Minister Marco Vinicio Ruiz announced.

The target was set at the beginning of the present administration but since then sales of industry and agriculture have slowed down. Melon producers, in particular, have been severely hit by bad weather.

Costa Rican Exports Drop 13%

August 2009

$5 billion were exported from January to July, 13.3% less than the same period of 2008.

Even though exports keep falling, there are positive signs as the reduction has been less steep than in June, when it was 14.2%.

"Regarding destinations, our most favorable market was the European Union, because of positive increases in some countries like the Netherlands (17%), Switzerland and France.

New Market for Costa Rican Food

November 2009

There is growing demand for organic and kosher food in the Northeastern states of the U.S.

In the last year, this region imported $16.500 million, out of which Costa Rica only captured 0.3% ($50 million) according to data from Procomer, the exports promotion agency.

Emmanuel Hess, Procomer manager, told Nacion.com: "We want to redirect our supply of high value food products to cities with high purchasing power in the United States".
