Costa Rica aims for FTA negotiations with China and Mercosur

The Costa Rican government looks forward to start negotiations in 2009 for Free Trade Agreements with China and Mercosur

The FTA with Mercosur with be in conjunction with the other Central American countries, stated on Wednesday, from Brasilia, the International Trade minister Marco Vinicio Ruiz.
"We have just finished a a feasibility study with China, and we may announce a negotiation anytime soon", said the minister in an AFP interview.
"Also in 2009, at the end of the year, we might start negotiating a Mercosur - Central America agreement", the minister stated. Speaking about the FTA Mercosur - Central America he said: "i don't see it happening in the short term, because we are amidst several important negotiations in Central America" referring to the agreement the Region is trying to sign with the European Union.

FTA Costa Rica - China: Fifth Round

The fifth negotiation round for a Free Trade Agreement between both countries starts this week.

Technical teams from both countries have scheduled an intense agenda for the week. They want to reach agreements in several chapters such as Technical Obstacles to Commerce, Health Measures, Cooperation, Dispute Settlement and Market Access.

Chile helps Costa Rica with China FTA

Chilean experts are giving support to Costa Rican authorities to prepare for the FTA that the Government plans to begin negotiating with China in less than six months.

During the visit of Chilean president, Michelle Bachelet, cooperation mechanism in place were reaffirmed, such as support for trade negotiations, said the Costa Rica minister of Foreign Trade, Marco Vinicio Ruiz.
