Costa Rica to Host Regional Insurance Congress

From July 29 – 31, the IX Central American and Caribbean Insurance Congress will be held at the Real Intercontinental Hotel Costa Rica.

The Congress will have "Global Trends in Insurance Regulation and Supervision" as a theme, and it is being organized by the National Chamber of Insurance Marketing Companies (CANECA) and the Pan American Insurance Producers (COPAPROSE). It will be attended by renowned professionals in the Costa Rican Insurance field.

In an article in Elfinancierocr.com, comments by Jorge Salas, president of CANECA, were reported. He said “that insurance rules and supervision, the possibility of new business and Costa Rica's position in the international market will be analyzed. ‘The aim is to generate more culture and judgment among people in the face of the opening of the market,’ said Salas."

The National Insurance Institute (INS by its initials in Spanish) intends to be the majority shareholder or acquire 100% of a company with regional presence, a project suspended in 2009 when the company faced opposition from institutions such as the Comptroller General of the Republic, the Pensions Superintendency and the Attorney General's Office.

Following the adoption of DR-CAFTA, foreign insurers can market insurance for shipping, commercial aviation and goods in transit in Costa Rica, without being formally established in the country.

Grupo Mundial to enter Costa Rica, Colombia insurance markets

Panama-based financial group Grupo Mundial is preparing to enter the Costa Rican and Colombian insurance markets in 2009.

"We want to enter the Costa Rican insurance market during the first half of the next year," said Jaime Jean François, VP and general manager of the firm's investment vehicle Mundial Desarrollo. on the sidelines of insurance and financial services association Limra's Latin American conference.
