Costa Rica: $420 million Loan for Health

The World Bank will provide the Costa Rican Social Security Department with a loan to implement digital systems and financial management.

From a statement issued by the World Bank:

WASHINGTON, March 15, 2016 - The Executive Directors of the World Bank (WB) has approved a loan of $420 million in support of the Strategic Agenda for Strengthening Health Insurance of the Costa Rican Social Security Department (CCSS), with the aim of improving the availability and quality of health care and strengthening institutional efficiency.

The loan will contribute to the amount of financing available for the implementation of a comprehensive medium and long term plan oriented at improvements in institutional management and provision of health services and the financial sustainability of universal health insurance of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Needs $400 million for Hospitals

The government is negotiating with the World Bank to obtain financing for the construction of new hospitals in Golfito, Turrialba and Cartago.

A World Bank (WB) mission will be visiting the country next week to negotiate technical aspects of the financing, however, because it is public debt, the loan must be approved by the Legislature.

$100 million Hospital Construction Project

The government of Costa Rica said it plans to build a new hospital for the elderly and is looking at alternatives for funding from abroad.

The project aims to construct a new geriatric hospital adjacent to the Immigration and Nationality Department in Uruca in San José, in order to meet demand from the growing elderly population in the country.

The Social Security Department has begun negotiations with the World Bank for $400 million to build a replacement hospital in Puntarenas, which was damaged by the recent earthquake.

The $400 million would also serve to finance other Social Security Department (CCSS) projects, including digital records, work on the new hospital in Cartago, and a new medical tower for the San Juan de Dios Hospital.
