Costa Rica: New Electricity Rates Hike

The state-run National Power and Light Company (CNFL by its initials in Spanish) has requested an increase of 26% for the second half of this year and another 14% next year.

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

Arguing that the non-approval of increases would jeopardize the implementation of the investment plan and commercialization of energy, Compania Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) asked ARESEP for two upward adjustments, one for the second half of this and the other for next year, 2018.

The company, which has proved inefficient in its management and implementation of projects such as the hydroelectric plant Balsa Inferior and Parque Eólico Valle Central, "... closed the year in the red last year after applying the interest payments on its debt, investment in power generation in recent years, and expenditure from the exchange rate differential. "

Nacion.com reports that "...These failed investments partly explain the CNFL also asking on Friday for an adjustment in the rate of generation (the costs of the company producing electricity). Specifically, the company asked the ARESEP for a 175% increase in generation from July this year and also 126% at the same rate for 2018, according to the file number ET-018-2017 which is being processed with the Energy Regulator."
