This low level of price increases is mainly due to less economic activity.

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

12-month inflation, a measure of the variation of prices when compared to one year ago, is at record lows. However, in the last two months the average price increase has been 0.78%, considerably above the 0.2% average for the first half of the year.

In August, the Consumer Prices Index (IPC) increased 0.65%, and the accumulated inflation for the first 8 months of the year now stands at 2.81% (an annualized inflation of 4.2%), way below the 10.77% increase in the same period of 2008. In the last 12 months, this index increased 5.71%, the lowest in record since 1978.
