Costa Rica: Interest in medical tourism increases

There are 22 Costa Rican doctors that make up the Costa Rica Medical Consortium and 24 that are a part of the Safer Medical Group.

Medical tourism has become a good business which has led many specialists to start up companies together to attend to foreigners who decide to seek treatment or surgery in the country.

Mexico, Spain and Poland are looking to position themselves as medical tourism destinations competing with the traditional ones such as India, Thailand, Brazil and Turkey.

Besides traditional competitors such as India, Thailand, Brazil and Turkey, new international players such as Mexico, Spain and Poland are now seeking to position themselves as medical tourism destinations. On the one hand is Poland, which through a government program is trying to promote itself as a good country in which to find health treatment, rehabilitation, diagnosis and aesthetics services and, through its participation in three consecutive fairs (Miami 2012, Moscow and Monaco in March 2013), has managed to be taken into account by the experts as a new player in this market.

Doctors in Costa Rica Form Alliance with U.S. Hospital

Safer Medial Group (Costa Rica) signed an alliance to improve patient care with Jackson Memorial Hospital in the USA.

The Safer Medical Group is comprised of Costa Rican doctors with different specialties.

Leticia Vindas wrote in El Financiero: "Foreign patients who wish to have any treatment in Costa Rica will be attended by the Safer Medical Group, while Costa Ricans who require a treatment that does not exist in the country may get it at Jackson Memorial Hospital in the USA.

El Salvador Bets on Medical Tourism

The Association of Medical Tourism (ATM) of the United States is in the country accompanied by tour operators to learn about medical possibilities. publishes in its website: “...the work of promoting medical services is encouraged by institutions such as: Cámara de Exportadores de Servicios de Salud de El Salvador (Exportsalud), Agencia de Promoción de Exportaciones de El Salvador (Exporta), Agencia de Promoción de Inversiones (Proesa) and the Ministerio de Turismo (Mitur)."

Costa Rica renews bet on medical tourism

The Cima, Catolica and Clinica Biblica Hospital joined up to form the first medical consortium that will treat foreigners.

In the last few years, this type of tourism has grown because it offers medical services mainly to Americans who do not have local medical coverage (Social Security) and who cannot afford attention in their country of origin.
