Costa Rica: Interamericana Merges with U Latina

The owner of both universities, Laureate Costa Rica, is awaiting approval from the authorities to merge both into a single education center.

A press release from the institution reported that the new center, if approved, would become the country largest private university, with over 30.000 students.

“This merger is being studied by the corresponding authorities”, informed company spokesperson Cindy Madrigal.

UPS Announces Purchase of Companies in Costa Rica

Without disclosing the terms of the agreement, the international company has announced that by the end of 2013 it will buy Union Pak de Costa Rica S.A. and Seisa Brokerage.

Nicaragua: Legal Challenge to Commercial Poultry Farming Merger

The challenge seeks to reverse authorization given for the US company Cargill to take over Pipasa.

Nicaragua's institute for protecting consumer rights presented the challenge, arguing that if the merger goes ahead, the resulting company will control 61% of the Nicaraguan poultry market, enabling it to undercut its competitors and force them out of the market, after which nothing would stop it from increasing prices at will.

Cooperatives Merge in Costa Rica

Coopenae, a savings and loans cooperative, was authorized to acquire Coopemex, a similar cooperative.

Coopenae is the National Educators Cooperative, and is currently the largest in the country. If the merger goes through, it will grow by 50%.

Foreign consortium to buy education centers in Costa Rica

Laureate Education Inc., an American-based chain of private universities, has bought two Costa Rica educational institutions, Universidad Latina (Latina U) and Universidad Americana (UAM).

Baltimore-based Laureate made the announcement of the purchase in Mexico, where it also acquired the Instituto Latino de Formación Integral (Ilafori).
