Costa Rica: Consumer and industrial credit rates grow the most

Interest rates in colones offered by State banks for consumer, livestock and industrial loans are the rates that have gone up the most in the last four months.

Interest rates in colones for "others", which include consumer loans, went from 12.5% on April 17 - when they were at their lowest - to 16.8% on August 5; an increase of 4.3 percentage points, according to the average rates published by the Central Bank.

Up to December 2015 28% of the total banking portfolio was destined for consumption activities, 26% to the construction sector and 16% to service activities.

Financial Monitoring figures compiled by the Commercial Intelligence unit at CentralAmericaData com show that credit unions are the institutions who awarded the most loans of this type, with 29.8% of their total portfolio.

Costa Rica: Basic Rate Remains Stable at 6.55%

The Central Bank of Costa Rica reported that for the third consecutive week, the passive base rate will remain at 6.55%.

Nacion.com reports: "With this result the indicator shows signs of stability, after hovering around the same percentage since August 8. It was only during the week of September 12 reported that the rate dropped and stood at 6.50% for a week ".

Costa Rica: Vehicle Loans Up 27%

Loans for the purchase of vehicles grew at twice the rate of consumer loans, which grew by 17% year on year to July 2013.

"There were good results in the placement of credit for cars, very much hand in hand with our Autoshow" said Carlos Brina, assistant manager of Scotiabank.

The current interest rates for loans to companies have reached levels not seen for six years.

An article in Nacion.com reports that "Business are facing real interest rates ranging from 11% to 13%", with "real rates" defined as "the nominal amount, announced or offered by entities, minus inflation."
