Costa Rica: Construction Figures - 2015

The number of works increased by 8.2% compared to the previous year, led by the province of Limon, where there was an increase of 17%, followed by San Jose with a rise of 15%.

From the Annual Bulletin "Construction Statistics 2015" produced by the National Institute of Statistics and Census:

Comparing 2015 to 2014, the number of works increased by 8.2%. Overall there was an increase for all provinces, but the biggest increase was in the province of Limon, 17.4%, followed by San Jose, 15.2%. An increase was registered in the building area and the number of works from 2014 to 2015. These works relate mainly to services, housing and industry.

"Mixed property development for $78 million"

"Jail and Health Center for $35 million"

In 2015, there was a noteworthy increase in the housing sector of 31.1% in homes ranging from 100 to less than 150 m2; on the other hand, the largest decline in housing was seen in those homes measuring less than 40 m2 with a -17.5% decrease compared to 2014.

Construction Went Down 13% in 2018

Last year in Costa Rica, permits were processed to build 3.03 million square meters, 13% less than the 3.49 million square meters reported in 2017.

From the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses report:

In 2018, there was a decrease in the number of works (-0.52 %), area (-13.4 %) and value (-5.5 %) compared to 2017.

The number of works grew by 4.2% compared to 2015, mainly explained by the 16% increase in the province of San Jose and 11% in Guanacaste.

From a report by the INEC:

In 2016, the number of works increased by 4.2% compared to 2015. Overall there was an increase for all provinces, the greatest increase was in the province of San José with 16.4%, followed by Guanacaste with 10.5%.  

More Housing Construction in Costa Rica

In 2014 22.503 homes were constructed, 12% more than were built in the previous year and above the annual average of 22,000 homes built in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Between January and July 2014 the total amount of square meters constructed in the country amounted to 1,608,018, just 0.5% more than in the same period in 2013.

The sector reported the largest number of square meters built was housing, which increased by 0.23% compared to the same period last year.
