Costa Rica: Construction Figures up to March 2016

The total square meters of construction registered during the first three months of the year was up 15% compared to the same period in 2015, driven by residential construction.

From a statement issued by the Association of Engineers and Architects of Costa Rica (CFIA):

The CFIA notes that if this trend continues, the year could close with more than 10 million square meters having been processed.

San Jose, April 18, 2016. During the first quarter of 2016, the CFIA recorded over 2,590 million square meters, a figure that is 14.71% higher than the amount reported in the same period last year. The Data corresponds to the registration of professional responsibility for construction plans which all project must submit to the CFIA prior to the application of a municipal building permit.

The construction guild plans to close 2017 with $650 million in public and private construction projects, and achieve a growth of almost 6% compared to 2016.

Figures from the Central Bank of Honduras indicate that in the first two months of this year private construction registered a 2% increase compared to the same period last year. Revistaconstruir.com reports that  "... the recovery comes as a result of the development of residential, commercial and industrial works in the municipalities of the Central District, San Pedro Sula and Choloma, among others in the northern zone."

In the first seven months of the year the number of square meters approved for construction of new buildings fell by 10,1% compared to the same period in 2013.

In the first 7 months of this year, the number of square meters processed fell by 10.1% compared to the same period last year.

Contraction of Construction Sector in Costa Rica

In the first five months of the year the number of square meters approved for construction of new buildings decreased by 9.5% compared to the same period in 2013.

Data from the Costa Rican Chamber of Construction (CCC) shows that the type of buildings seeing the greatest decline are for commercial purposes, which experienced a 31.6% reduction in the number of square meters processed during the first five months of the year.
