Costa Rica: Agribusiness Exports Fall 7%

From January to September 2019, sales of the agricultural sector abroad totaled $2,080 million, 7% less than in the same period in 2018, mainly because of the performance of banana, pineapple and coffee exports.

Figures from the Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer) detail that between the first nine months of 2018 and the same period of 2019, exports registered a slight increase, going from $8,490 million to $8,629 million.

In contrast to the overall positive variation, for the periods in question the exports of companies in the agricultural sector fell from $2,236 million to $2,080 million. In the case of banana, pineapple and coffee sales, falls of 12%, 6% and 7%, respectively, were reported.

Nacion.com reports that "... The food sector is also in decline. As a general item, it fell 4% to September, as it generated $1.171 million this year, compared to $1.221 last year."

The article adds that "... The negative effect on the definitive regime is also maintained. Companies of this type generated 6% less income in the analysis period. In 2018, they went from placing $4.179 million to selling assets worth $3.935 million this year."

Panama: Agricultural Exports Continue to Fall

July 2017

In the first five months of the year, banana, melon, watermelon and pineapple exports fell 7%, 52%, 55%, and 18%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2016.

Figures from the Comptroller General of the Republic indicate that in the case of bananas, the value exported in the first five months of the year amounted to $37 million, while the exported value of watermelon was $6 million.
