Copa Airlines Suffers From Argentine Peso Debacle

The stock price of Copa Holdings has fallen and at the same time the airline has stopped accepting Argentina's currency for ticket sales.

Thursday, December 3, 2015

Restrictions in Argentina for converting local currency to dollars and for sending funds abroad, have now forced American Airlines and Air Canada to take the same measure implemented by Copa.

An article on Elsalvador.com reports that "... This situation is similar to what occurred in Venezuela and which led the airline industry to reduce its presence in that nation. In the case of Venezuela, Copa Airlines had some 427 million dollars retained at the end of the third quarter. "

The upcoming end to the administration of President Fernandez will mean dramatic changes in monetary policy in Argentina, not excluding the adjustment to exchange rate to meet market realities.

"... We will have to wait for the fourth quarter to see the real impact of Copa Airline's decision not to accept Argentine pesos. The devaluation of Latin American currencies caused Copa Holdings profits to fall by 90% in the third quarter, earning $6.2 million between July and September. "

Cost of Airfare From Venezuela to Panama Doubles

November 2013

Air fares rose from $1,100 to $2,500, threatening to cause a dramatic drop in the flow of tourists from Venezuela to Panama.

Hostages of Only Two Airlines

May 2012

The market for air travel in Costa Rica is dominated by AviancaTaca and Copa, meaning that the margin of price competition is non-existent.

An article in Elfinancierocr.com further notes that "the cost of tickets is not always proportional to the distances. For example, although the closest destinations are Central American ones, for almost the same money you can travel to some cities in the United States; it is also more expensive to fly to Honduras than Guatemala, although the later is further away."

Panama Pushes Back Air Tickets Purchase

July 2010

Authorities have pushed back until July 14 a bidding process to choose the airline that will provide the government’s air tickets.

The extension was requested by the Association of Panamanian Airlines (Alap), due to the interest shown by more airlines, which depend on their parent companies to make decisions.
