Smuggling Undermines Nicaraguan Sugar Producers

Sugar producers are denouncing the illegal activity that could be on the rise in the coming months.

Notable differences in sugar prices between Nicaragua and neighboring countries are encouraging the smuggling of the product, assert producers from the Central Azucarera in Nicaragua.

A week ago, the National Committee of Sugar Producers (CNPA) revealed that they have detected a significant increase in orders for sugar at border posts, mainly with Honduras, reported LaPrensa.com.ni.

"René Blandon, head of the Central Azucarera in Nicaragua, said that it is not known if the smuggling is still going on, but if it is not controlled it could lead to shortages of the product locally, pushing up the price of the product", according to an article on the website.

Central American ‘pulperias’ (small retail businesses in local neighborhoods), the price of a pound of sugar are as follows: $0.36 at shops in Nicaragua, $0.44 in Honduras; $ 0.45 in El Salvador, and $0.49 in Costa Rica.
