Costa Rican construction outstrips rest of economy

Construction is growing faster than the economy as a whole in Costa Rica, and a flood of foreign investment appears to be behind it.

The government's monthly index of economic activity reveals a wide gap between construction and other sectors, with export growth slowing notably in the face of financial difficulties in the United States.
"Industry's exports have been slowing down in recent months and growth has slowed too in agriculture," said the economist Luis Mesalles.

Costa Rican Economy Slows Down

In July the Monthly Economic Activity Index showed an annual variation of 3.2%, confirming predictions of a slowdown in the second half of 2012.

Elfinancierocr.com reports that "The Monthly Economic Activity Index (MIEA) showed a variation of the internanual cyclical trend of 3.2% last July, which reveals a brake on the growth of the national economy, and even includes a figure much lower than expected for the end of the year by the Central Bank (4.8%). "

However when compared to the same period in 2012, the stagnation is much more clear, since the index was then at 3.19%.

In the first eight months, economic activity increased by 5.23% over the same period in 2009.

Sectors showing best performance were: transportation, storage and communications, commerce, education, mining, hotels and restaurants, social and personal community services, electricity and water, construction and agriculture.
