Construction Down 18% at I Quarter 2018

In the first three months of the year the amount of construction actually built in Nicaragua went down by 18% compared to the same period in 2017, mainly due to a decrease in residential projects.

Figures for the first quarter were mainly the result of a decrease in the amount of completed residential buildings (-16.6%), and those for services (-32.9%) and industry (-19.0%); and an increase in those used for trade (46.5%), explained the Central Bank of Nicaragua in a report.

The document details that when analyzing construction by geographical area, it can be seen that the amount of finished construction showed a homogeneous behavior. In Managua, there was a decrease of 16.4%, and in the rest of cities, 20.7%.

In the first quarter, the finished constructions of low-income housing amounted to 49,066 square meters of construction (56,610 m2 in 2017).IV).

Costa Rica: Private Construction Down 6%

Due to the performance of residential construction, during the first quarter of the year a decrease of 6% was reported in the total constructed area with respect to the same period in 2017.

The Central Bank of Costa Rica reported that " ... In the first quarter of 2018, construction with a private destination reported a total of one million one hundred and fifty-nine thousand square meters built. According to the trend cycle series for the quarterly indicator of meters constructed, this implied a decrease of 6.3% compared to the same period in the previous year."

Between January and March construction designed for private use grew at an annual rate of 3%, driven by nonresidential projects, which grew by 5.8%, while residential projects rose by 1.2%.
