Coffee Auction Begins in Guatemala

Wednesday sees the beginning of the eighth electronic auction organized by the Excellence Cup.

28 batches of coffee from various regions of Guatemala will be auctioned.
In the last event, the highest price was obtained by the El Injerto plantation ($22.04) and a total of 402 bags, each weighing 69 kg, were sold for $526,150.

This time around buyers from Japan, Norway, USA, Canada, Korea, New Zealand, Russia and Australia are expected to participate.

$28 per Pound for Guatemalan Coffee

This was the price achieved by coffee from the El Injerto plantation in the electronic auction held at the Cup of Excellence event.

In second place was Rosma plantation, which got $22.10 per pound. Las Macadamias came third.

“According to the Guatemalan National Coffee Association (Anacafé), the average price paid was $8.92 with a total 34,980 kg sold equivalent to $712,234.

28 premium coffee lots will be auctioned on July 14 at the 2010 Excellence Cup Internet Auction.

The participating coffees were chosen by experts back on March and April. Domestic tasters selected 60 varieties, which were then tested by international specialists, whom chose the best 28.

The specialty coffee auction netted $718.838, the highest of any of the nine countries where the Excellence Cup is held.

An average coffee quintal was sold for $723, surpassing the previous record of $536.27, which dates back to 2008.

“La Suiza” plantation got the highest score at the Excellence Cup.

The highest price was paid for coffee from the El Injerto farm, at $22.04 per pound, $58.16 less than the 2008 record.

Las Macadamias and Montecristo farms obtained the second and third place with $14.55 and $12.10 per pound.
